On Thursday, July 11, 2024, U.S. health officials said nearly 60 people have gotten sick from eating Diamond Shruumz edibles. These included chocolate bars, cones, and gummies that were recalled. Thirty of those who got sick had to go to the hospital, and sadly, one person died.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated the situation on Tuesday. People who ate these products reported having seizures, feeling very agitated, having unusual heartbeats, and even losing consciousness. The CDC said cases have been reported in 27 states, and more are expected.
In Arizona, two children were hospitalized after eating the edibles, according to Banner Health. Two other kids also ate them but had milder symptoms. Banner Health was one of the first to warn about the dangers of Diamond Shruumz products when patients ended up in hospitals.
The company that makes Diamond Shruumz recalled all its products last month after finding high levels of a toxin from mushrooms. The toxin, muscimol, can cause symptoms like those seen in people who got sick after eating these products, including seizures and confusion.
The recall affects products sold across the country in stores and by mail order. Prophet Premium Blends, the California company behind Diamond Shruumz, has stopped making and selling these products while they work with the FDA to find out what caused the illnesses.
Consumers who bought Diamond Shruumz should stop using them and contact the company for a refund. They can call 209-314-0881 or email info@diamondshruumz.com with their order number.
